DLCO

The diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is a 10-second breathe-hold measurement (single breath method) that helps to determine the lung’s ability to transfer gas from inspired air through the bloodstream. It measures the uptake of carbon monoxide (CO) per unit time/per mm of driving pressure of CO. Since hemoglobin affects DLCO, a hemoglobin value must be provided on the day of the study or within the past 3 days via a venipuncture.

How do I perform a DLCO test?

  1. Position your lips around the mouthpiece connected to a device. This apparatus will administer a specific gas mixture and continuously monitor and document your test data.

  2. Begin by taking a series of calm, regular breaths.

  3. Inhale deeply and ensure a complete exhalation.

  4. Swiftly draw in a breath through your mouth.

  5. Retain your breath for either a duration of 10 seconds or for as long as your capacity allows.

  6. Finally, exhale.
